HMS Book Fair: March 6 – 9th

Mark you calendar, make your shopping list and plan on stopping by the HMS Book Fair.

The PTO-sponsored Book Fair will be held in the MRC starting Monday March 6th through Thursday March 9th.

Book Fair Hours:
Monday, 3/6: 7:15 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. — HMS Choir Performances
Tuesday, 3/7: 7:15 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Wednesday, 3/8: 7:15 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. — Peer Leadership Tour for incoming D181 5th Graders, Mr. Pena speaks
Thursday, 3/9: 7:15 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Book Fair closes after school.

All profits from the sale will benefit the HMS PTO as well as the MRC.

PTO Nominating Committee for 2017-2018 Exec Board

The HMS PTO is currently looking for representatives to serve on the PTO Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee identifies candidates and determines the executive board slate which will be presented at our PTO General Membership meeting in May. We are seeking representatives from each of the HMS feeder schools.

Register Now for Heart & Sole (Girls on the Run)

Girls on the Run: Heart and Sole

Today’s middle-school girls face many challenges and obstacles that can affect their emotional and physical well-being. The Girls on Track curriculum is designed to address these challenges by empowering girls to make thoughtful and healthy decisions. The Girls on Track curriculum is delivered over the course of 10 weeks and addresses the societal, mental and emotional challenges particular to their age.
How to join Girls on the Run/Heart & Sole:
Step 1: Discuss with your family and decide if you are able to make the commitment. Practices will take place Tuesdays & Thursdays, 3:00 – 4:15 p.m. starting March 7th. You need to be able to attend all of the sessions, unless you are sick.  The 5k run is scheduled for May 13th in Joliet.

Step 2: Register online here! The cost is $175 per participant. Full or partial scholarships are available and have been awarded to all who have expressed a need. Please DO NOT let the cost prevent you from participating. We will try to make it work.

News from the District

Registration for returning students entering Grades 1-8 is slated to begin after spring break. 

Simplify Summer Planning with the D181 Summer Camp Expo (March 9)
All community members are invited to the annual D181 Summer Camp Expo, taking place Thursday, March 9 at Prospect School (6-8:30pm). This is a one-stop-shop to meet with exhibitors one-on-one and learn about local and regional overnight camps, sports camps, fine arts programs, science and educational camps, recreation activities, and more. New exhibitors are added every year. Children are welcome, and no registration is needed. Click here for more details.

5th Grade IEP/504 Parent Event Scheduled for March 14
If you have a 5th grade child with an IEP or 504 Plan, join us for the event “Transitioning into Middle School with an IEP or 504.” The program will include a panel discussion on the District’s continuum of services, classes, and level of support. We will also discuss what parents can do to help their child through this transition process.

 

D181 Heroin Education Family Night

District 181 invites you to an evening of education and conversation about a topic that is hitting close to home:  The heroin epidemic in DuPage County.  District 181 is happy to be partnering with leaders in the community to learn and discuss what we all can do together to support our youth and one another with this growing problem.

Former D181 family sharing their personal story dealing with addiction

This evening will include information on the heroin epidemic in DuPage County, signs and symptoms of addiction, early intervention and prevention strategies, current local statistics, and what is being done to address this epidemic locally.

Trivia Night Online Ticket Sales have ended. If you are still interested in attending, or want to add an extra person to your existing team, please email Janet and Carol at VPFundraising@hmspto.org and we will see if we can make it happen! ………We are still accepting donations for our fundraiser. Your gift would be greatly appreciated.

How do I buy tickets?
Tables seat up to six people.  You may sign up as a team or purchase individual tickets. Do you have more than six people in your group? You can purchase two tables and we will seat your teams next to each other.

What is the schedule for the evening?
6:30 p.m. –  Table decoration (optional)
7:00 p.m. –  Food and entertainment (HMS Jazz Ensemble), raffles and silent auctions
7:45 p.m. – Trivia game begins

Will food be served?
Yes! Each ticket includes light fare dinner and beverages.  No alcohol will be served or permitted at the event.

What is a Trivia Night?
One of the hottest trends in gaming right now is Trivia Nights. Our event will be hosted by professional trivia company Pub Trivia.  This is a rollicking good time similar to events hosted in venues throughout Chicagoland but appropriate for both middle schoolers and adults.

Does my team need a name and theme?
Yes, your team will need a name. Themes and table decorations are highly encouraged. Suggested themes are:
Sports Teams, College Alma Maters, Fictional Characters, Mardi Gras, Movies, Music, etc.

If I’m not able to attend, can I donate instead?
Yes, please do! This is HMS’s only fundraiser of the year.

Operation Snowflake Cancelled

Hello HMS parents,

Unfortunately due to low participation from the involved middle schools, Operation Snowflake has been cancelled for Friday, February 24th and will not be rescheduled for this school year. If you have submitted a registration form and payment, they will be sent home with your child this week.
